The Fountain of the Four Rivers

The Four Rivers Fountain in the blue hourThis is the The Fountain of the Four Rivers or if you are Italian, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. This beautiful fountain was sculpted by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, one of my favorite artists from this period. You will find this work in the Piazza Navona, in Rome, Italy. Both of the times I was in Rome I was lucky enough to stay right across the street from this piazza and we ate lunch here several times on our way to and from our days destination. You will often find this plaza to be a busy spot for tourists, hawkers of various pieces of junk, several cafes and of course musicians playing for a coin.

This image was captured during the blue hour. This is the time of transition from the golden hour into night. The sun is over the horizon and there is still enough light to capture all of the color and detail without the need of a tri-pod or flashes. The lighting from the fountain and the floods on the building provide a wonderful range of color and light, that at this time of the early evening always comes out slightly saturated and vibrant.
